R07 – Vinaròs

Route

Description of the route

A demanding outing that will be better to schedule when you have already accumulated enough kilometers to not face it without suffering too much. We leave Vinaròs, practically at sea level, on the N232 towards the CV135 Càlig detour. Although without big ramps, we will find a rough road that will make us gain altitude. We cross Càlig and continue towards Cervera del Maestre, already in an inland area with some demanding ramps and almost 8 kilometers of constant climb. Leaving Cervera behind, we advance towards Sant Mateu and from there to Tírig, with practically no rest, to continue south on the CV131 and reach 500 meters of elevation gain in 50 kilometers, without outstanding passes but with a terrain that is always rough. Now we find a stretch of steep descent until we meet the CV10, where we will turn towards La Salzadella with a slope of 2.5 kilometers at 7% that, after 70 kilometers in the legs, will begin to weigh. Once we have passed this tough stretch we descend towards Santa Magdalena del Pulpis and from there to Peñíscola to, once again at sea level, return to Vinaròs along the N340.

Back in the 15th century, Vinaròs was one of the most important capitals of the Kingdom of Valencia, within the Crown of Aragon. It hosted one of its two censorious parliaments, where nobles from Vinaròs to Orihuela met to decide the course of their interests. Six centuries later, Vinaròs remains one of the most important towns in our province, as a reference of the second most important population center of our region, the Baix Maestrat. However, it was not until after the reconquest that Vinaròs became independent from Peñíscola to experience its growth.
Fishing town, with more than 20,000 inhabitants and a huge summer tourism, Vinaròs has the contrast of a town with history and a regular destination. In addition to summer, it also becomes the reference of the province in the Carnivals, in February or March, a good time to know the party of the city. In addition to its beaches, coves and fishing port, it is advisable to visit the modernist Plaza Jovellar, the archpriestly church of Assumpció, with Baroque and Renaissance facades, and the church of San Agustín, converted into the municipal auditorium. Vinaròs is known as the city of Llangostí. A visit to Vinaròs is not complete if it is not accompanied by a seafood paella, or any other typical dish combining fish or seafood from the port. Restaurant Fernandos (Paseo Blasco Ibáñez, 17), Cha Chisco (Carrer Costa i Borrás, 33), or Restaurant Mira Mar (Paseo Blasco Ibáñez, 12) are the best option to combine rice, fish and seafood. Vinaròs is a very touristic town, with a wide enough hotel offer to cater for all tastes.
